Longtime cough - cold (Rhinitis) and ayurveda

Rhinitis, characterised by inflammation of the nasal mucosa, can lead to symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and itching. In Ayurveda, rhinitis is referred to as "Pratishyaya" and is typically attributed to an imbalance in the doshas, particularly Kapha dosha, although Vata and Pitta imbalances can also play a role.

Ayurvedic Perspective and Management of Rhinitis

  1. Dosha Imbalance:

Kapha Dosha: Causes excessive mucus production, leading to congestion and runny nose.

Vata Dosha: Can cause dryness and irritation in the nasal passages.

Pitta Dosha: May result in inflammation and burning sensations.

Treatment Approaches:

  • Dietary Modifications:

Avoiding cold, oily, and heavy foods that can aggravate Kapha.

Incorporating warm, light, and easily digestible foods.

Including spices like ginger, black pepper, and turmeric which can help reduce Kapha.

  • Lifestyle Adjustments:

Practising regular nasal irrigation with saline water or herbal decoctions.

Engaging in Pranayama (breathing exercises) to clear nasal passages.

Maintaining a warm environment to avoid cold exposure.

  • Home Remedies:

Tulsi (Holy Basil): Known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Turmeric: Acts as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Ginger: Helps in reducing inflammation and congestion.

  • Panchakarma Therapies:

Nasya: Administering medicated oils or herbal juices through the nasal passage to clear Kapha and toxins.

Steam Inhalation: Using herbal decoctions to open nasal passages and relieve congestion.

Preventive Measures:

Strengthening immunity and practising hygiene and avoiding allergens that can trigger rhinitis.Staying hydrated to keep the nasal passages moist.
